PAUL J. FALCO SCHOLARSHIP

The Paul J. Falco Scholarship provides a scholarship opportunity to high school level students from the Village of Marble Cliff who demonstrate outstanding scholastic and leadership qualities. Beginning in 2019, the Scholarship is administered through The Columbus Foundation.  For more information, click here.

The late Paul J. Falco, who served as Mayor of the Village for 36 years, was an ardent supporter of the Village, its residents, and the pursuit of life-long learning.  The generosity of this endowment by Mayor Falco and his wife Bobbie Hall Falco provides the opportunity to recognize the talented youth of the Village of Marble Cliff.  The Paul J. Falco Scholarship has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to residents of the Village of Marble Cliff since its inception.

To be eligible, a student must be a high school level student, current resident of the Village and have lived in the Village for at least one year.   Candidates must have a minimum 3.0 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).  Awarding the scholarship will be based on the applicant’s scholastic achievements (33%), character (33%), and service to school and community (34%).  First priority will be given to candidates who have not received the scholarship in the past.

To be considered, a student must complete The Columbus Foundation General Online Application which can be found on here.

March 1 at 5:00 pm is the deadline for consideration of a scholarship in each year.

Individuals may make contributions to the Paul J. Falco Scholarship Fund at any time.  Additional contributions will help the Scholarship grow and provide more opportunity for the recognition of outstanding students who live in the Village of Marble Cliff.  To make a donation to the Paul J. Falco Scholarship Fund (3711), click here.

LEAF PICK-UP STARTS MONDAY OCTOBER 29

Weekly curbside leaf pick-up is scheduled to begin Monday, October 29 and continue into early December. Vacuuming will be done each Monday (or the next possible day if inclement weather) by the same company, Environmental Management Inc. we have used for the last few years. Please observe the following:

  1. Rake leaves to the grass tree lawn strip area next to the street as soon as possible. DO NOT rake leaves into the street, as cars parked on the street can start a fire. Plus, the leaves can block the storm sewers causing dangerous ponding and expensive sewer cleaning.
  2. Do not place/mix yard waste and tree branches with the leaves. Dirt, decaying plants, and tree branches can clog the vacuuming equipment, slowing or stopping removal for that day. This costs the Village extra money and delays collection.
  3. If you want your leaves picked up, do not park your car in front of the piles on Mondays. Remember to pile leaves in the grass tree lawn where the truck can have easy access. The truck is equipped with a side mount vacuum and designed to pull alongside a leaf pile, not back up to the pile. And remember, the vacuum hose is only 10 feet long.
  4. For those living on Cambridge, Village Court, or Arlington, do not place leaves onto the “island” across the street from your home. All leaves are to be piled in the grass tree lawn along the curb in front of your home. If you have a lawn service, please be sure to tell them, as they have been one of our biggest violators.
  5. Leaves may be bagged in biodegradable paper bags, but will then be removed by the Grandview Heights Service Dept. as yard waste each Monday through the end of November. The bags cannot be thrown into the vacuum trucks.
  6. If your street has already been vacuumed for the day, the service will not return to your street until the next scheduled Monday pickup.

NEW DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL FOR 2015 W. FIFTH AVE. (JULY, 2018)

At its July 16, 2018 Council meeting, a new concept plan for development of 2015 W. Fifth Ave. was presented by F2 Companies to Village Council.  The new plan calls for saving and utilizing the existing manor house and developing the property with townhouses and flats, the total number not to exceed 40 units.  The plan will continue to be reviewed by Council, with its next regular meeting being on August 20, 2018.  Public input is welcome during the review process.  Link to a rendering of the proposal and site plan.

The Columbus Landmarks Foundation responded favorably to the new proposal, as noted in a release (below) they offered publicly following the Council meeting and information posted on their website.

The Columbus Landmarks Foundation communication stated:

“Hope for Marble Cliff Packard Mansion”

At this evening’s Marble Cliff Village Council meeting, the developer that proposed demolition of the 1907 Gateway Mansion to build a new apartment building presented an alternative concept that now includes reuse of this architecturally and historically significant building. Designed by renowned Ohio architect Frank Packard, the Tudor-style mansion has graced 2015 West Fifth Avenue for more than a century. The building is currently featured on Columbus Landmarks’ 2018 Most Endangered List.  Columbus Landmarks applauds the building owner, the developer (F2 Companies), and the architecture firm (Sullivan Bruck Architects) on this new approach. By incorporating the mansion in the redevelopment of the site, the important character and identity of Marble Cliff Village will be retained while serving as a catalyst for future prosperity and economic growth.

The new proposal calls for eight carriage houses at the front of the site bordering West Fifth Avenue including a gateway entrance drive that retains a view of the mansion from the street; removal of a non-contributing addition at the rear of the building; removal of an apartment on Roxbury Road to create a second, traffic-calming entrance/exit to the development; and construction of a new-build, three-story structure behind the mansion with 34 units and a connector walkway to the original mansion. A portion of the existing mansion may be used as a yet to be determined amenity area for residents, with the remainder to be potentially used for 4-6 additional residential units or a commercial tenant.

Marble Cliff Village is distinguished by the gracious residences designed by Frank Packard, arguably the most historically significant Ohio architect. Packard’s portfolio includes Hayes and Orton Halls at The Ohio State University; the Atlas Building; the former Governor’s Mansion (now The Columbus Foundation); the Seneca; North High School; Memorial Hall; the T&O Railroad Building; the Sells Mansion; and other prominent courthouses, schools, and university buildings throughout the state.

Columbus Landmarks commends Mayor Kent Studebaker and the members of Marble Cliff Village Council for their careful consideration of this matter and for maintaining an open dialogue with stakeholders and members of the public. We also applaud the active engagement of many Village residents throughout this process. Columbus Landmarks wishes to reiterate our commitment to providing our expertise and resources to help move this proposal forward.”
